D’LEAU COLLABORATES LIKE CRAZY
MEET the MUSICIAN USING TRASH TO FINISH HIS VIDEO&nbsp;

Videos by TRASH ANGELS

Have you remixed “O1” on TRASH yet?GRAMMY Award-nominated singer, songwriter and producer&nbsp; D’Leau shared the footage from his newest track “01” so that fans and newcomers alike can help finish the video on TRASH. The post-funk&nbsp;stalwart can’t wait to see how people interpret “01” and pair it with their original footage and style in their videos. Everyone is invited to participate, whether you’re a longtime fan or first-time listener. Simply remix his footage and&nbsp;select “01” as your soundtrack.&nbsp;D’Leau will most definitely watch your video, and is going to post his absolute faves all over the internet. (To get started, right now check out his very own remix channel titled “D’Leau” here. )&nbsp;
TRASH loves Brook’s perspective on collaboration just as much as we love his music, which is why we’re including a few snippets from our conversations with him in the Q&amp;A below. Read this if you’re interested in co-creating videos, envisioning the future of fandom in the music industry and / or utilizing the TRASH community to expand your artistic vision.&nbsp;

As an independent artist, how important is consulting your own community while making your work?&nbsp;
D’Leau is a band. My name is Brook but D’Leau is a band. Whether you see a performance with a bunch of people on stage or not, it’s always going to be a collaborative process, not me by myself.&nbsp;I’m an independent artist in the sense I’m not working with a major record label, but I enjoy collaboration. I have amazing friends, one of whom is a designer named Ted Jewel, and we go over so much together.&nbsp;When I’m inspired to do things, I don’t usually have an understanding of why I’m talking about a certain thing, but sometimes Ted or another one of my friends does.&nbsp;
For example, “O1.”&nbsp;The song is in three parts by chance. I keep my instrumentals in a playlist on my phone, all the stuff I’m vibing with&nbsp; in hopes of developing lyrics. I had four tracks in a playlist and they played all together in a row one day and I was like, “Why does this sound like one song to me?” So I play it for Ted and he’s like, “You’re right. The first three are one song but the fourth is different.” We start talking about love, and even though I had a loose idea for lyrics already, this conversation totally pointed me to what the song was really about. Ted heard the story about love, and the song grew from there. Then I passed the song along to its director and that’s how we have these great visuals.&nbsp;I don’t believe that videos need to represent what the song is about exactly, at all. When collaborating with a director, I’m more like, “What do you see? What do you hear?” I love seeing things from newer perspectives that I couldn’t see from my own vantage point. I think it helps the song itself grow wings and go into places that I didn’t see coming.
Sometimes I’ll judge my own work and want to get rid of something and one of these collaborators goes, “No way, you should keep that.” The creativity becomes about more than just me and my face and mind. Collaboration helps me avoid being my own worst enemy.

Your fans are now furthering that creativity in their remixes on TRASH. Why is inviting listeners into your artistic process so important to you?&nbsp;I want to make my audience part of my process in all sorts of ways. I have a lot more songs coming out this year, and I always want those releases to be a dialogue with the audience. I want them to name&nbsp; songs in the future, for example. I just want to cultivate that involvement. As an artist, I don’t think you can dictate who your fans are. Involving fans, or listeners, into the process keeps things open-ended and makes space for somebody to insert themselves into it.
I don’t see fans wanting just music anymore. There’s so much great music out there, but what’s the draw? For me, involving listeners means the draw becomes collaboration. I want my listeners to know I’m open to what they have to say. I want us all to feel like we’re a part of something, versus just a consumer of something.
People don’t want a cool shirt or a cool song; they want to be a part of you. We all love music videos. What’s your all-time favorite?&nbsp;“Once In A Lifetime” by Talking Heads. I’m a huge David Byrne fan and I like to think I model parts of what I do off of him. He used every device and facility that he was comfortable with to tell his story. I will say I think I’m a better singer than him, but that doesn’t mean I’m better than him. He knew that he was not a traditional kind of singer, but also he knew that he had a bunch of other ways to tell his story and convey his thoughts and feelings.

A lot of times, his concepts would come across as simple but they were brilliant. The simplicity of what you do can also create space for interpretation, instead of mapping out everything for your listener or viewer, simplicity leaves room for them. It’s like, “I’m going to give you the first part of a sentence, how would you complete it?” That’s one of my favorite videos of all time for that reason.

He’s playing a character, but I don’t know what character it is. You just get this feeling. He’s not trying to be literal or explain anything, he’s just evoking the feeling of the song. I’ve heard that song a million times and still don’t know what he’s talking about. I don’t look at music as something that needs to be analyzed, a lot of the time it’s just about feeling it.

Now, go remix Brook’s video!&nbsp;

The three parts of “O1” correspond to the song’s three acts.&nbsp;

	Peggy Noland (@PeggyNoland) makes over all the best cars in Los Angeles. There’s the one she wrapped in holographic material until it resembled a giant Lisa Frank sticker, the sedan she dressed in different shades of pastel fur and, of course, the pink Powerpuff Girl pickup truck.

As a fashion designer, installation artist and vehicular costume design expert, her latest enterprise of the three, Noland believes in making things as many people can experience as possible. She refers to her iconic store fronts in Kansas City and Los Angeles as an opportunity to “pay a monthly fee to have a 13-year solo show.”

Upon moving to L.A., nobody had to enter her studio, or have the money to browse her store, in order to be impacted by her art. All they had to do was drive down Sunset Boulevard, a standard task in this city, to experience multifaceted installations complete with giant, pop-art objects that screamed “Peggy Noland!”

Whereas Peggy first set out making artwork in L.A. that people could catch from their cars, in recent years she began exalting average cars into the art pieces. Before their makeovers, some of these cars represented more drudgery than joy to their owners, which makes for some majorly emotional moments when Peggy reveals their makeovers on her Youtube show “Peggy’s Cartoon-Up.” In using cars as her canvas, Peggy has expanded the geographical reach of her work and given countless onlookers something to marvel at.

TRASH caught up with Noland at her home studio (a total joy lab) in L.A.&nbsp;

	How did you learn to make things?

Creativity was encouraged in my household. My dad is an artist and my mom wouldn’t call herself one, but SHE IS! I didn’t go to art school, but starting trying and failing early. I loved clothes first, then installations felt right, then sculptures sounded fun, then cars seemed HARD and I would like to keep rollin through the mediums!

What do you love about playing with different textures in your art?&nbsp;

Everything is slick and hard right now – our phones, cases, computers. I think gooey and soft feels good to artists right now… lumpy ceramics, experimental foods, clothing that is obviously hand made. We want goo! We demand squish! Imperfection spilling off the edges!&nbsp;

I will say that although popping a Tide Pod is fun, it really doesn’t feel worth it.

I just heard on the radio that the top holiday toy for kids was toys that ‘surprise.’ So, like an egg that you open to reveal your mystery gift. We could do the same thing as TRASH App merch for adults. Like send out eggs with a mystery texture inside for people to use their fresh manicures to SMASH N FILM?! Like cottage cheese...

How did you get into painting cars?

The first car I painted was a ‘thank you’ present for Brock Bryan who had been working at my shop in Kansas City. I painted it in oil paint like a big skittles bag! Then I just kept going, trying new processes each time. My friends Jessica, Maryann and I started filming it for a YouTube series called ‘Peggy’s CarToon Up.’

I loved getting to be involved in this ‘before and after’ makeover moment and it felt like a natural extension of my studio practice. Cars are just the current medium. It feels like I’m putting rolling public sculptures on the streets, and I love everyone’s reaction. People are so excited by it!

Why is craft store giant Joann Fabrics one of your creative havens?

I mean, have you been there? I love the glitter. I love the stickers. I love the cricket stuff. I love the $7,000/yard sequin fabric.I love their restrooms. I love the Cherry Coke by the registers. I love the classes. I love the fairy garden stuff. I love the Husqvarna machine that is always running. I love the puzzles. I love the doll clothes.

I even love the long lines, because they give me time to try to desperately connect to their wifi to pull up the coupons they text me about 3 times a day. I Love My Aunt Joanns!What is one of your creative intentions or goals for 2020?

I would love to be a guest judge on Project Runway, and holographic wrap an airplane and back-hoe and wind turbine and roller coaster and crane. And design a theme park.

	Ali Madigan (@Alimadigan) is an installation artist, set designer and architect from Oakland, California. She’s lived in Paris, New York, London, Berkeley and Los Angeles and is likely stretching alongside some piece of the California coast at this very moment.

Madigan’s design aesthetic consists of simple shapes and strong colors, expertly arranged into geometric poems that create spaces and fill them with feeling. At home in Oakland, Ali produces this type of work at local venues such as Midway Gallery and the experimental music festival and art exhibition&nbsp;Feels.&nbsp;
She also travels to share these design skills in all sorts of production environments – from music video shoots and film sets to installations at museums and events.

Madigan’s personal work is often tranquil and always beautiful. The nexus of her personal practice is The Palace, her ongoing construction project in West Oakland. What began as a warehouse with about a hundred years of history under its belt, including stints as both a bar and a laundromat,&nbsp; is now Madigan’s residential exhibition space. She can be found knocking out windows, stripping walls and hosting other artists in The Palace on any given day. It serves as a home and community space to many, and provides Madigan with a constant impetus to evolve how she sees things.

Luckily for TRASH, Madigan says her eye for detail also applies to video.

“I’m an obsessive freak for composition and playing with media,” she admits.

TRASH caught up with Madigan to talk education, inspiration and feeling mischievous.&nbsp;

	HOW DID YOU BECOME EDUCATED IN YOUR CRAFT?
This is always a complicated and exciting question because my education has been far from straightforward. Sometimes I like to define it by what I didn’t do — I didn’t go to art school, or even high school (I dropped out at 13, then again at 16 for good). In those days, I was obsessed with clothes, so I learned to make my own. I also went to sideshows and drove scrapers, so I learned to repair cars and install sound systems. My reverence for design and aesthetic value have always fueled my interests, and my interests drove me through a winding and unconventional education that required me to be a self-starter.
I was lucky to feel validated in my craft once I entered the design world. When people would ask me, “Where’d you learn to do that?” I felt a sense of mischief because I never really learned — I just tried (sometimes haphazardly) and did.

WILL YOU TRASH some videos of your creative process? &nbsp;

&nbsp;

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT designing spaces?
I love making people feel connected to spaces. I think when a space is well designed, it’s evocative. A person can feel warmth, excitement, spiritual harmony, all without needing the language for it.
The Palace is such a personal project that allows me to experiment with intuition and connection to space in that way. Since walking into it two and a half years ago, it’s taken on the role of a home, work studio, showroom, gathering space and trippy experimental center. The process has been sporadic — working in spurts where things get messy and loud for a while (via construction) and then staged as a habitat again. Each time I set it up a little differently, live with the configuration and notice the effects. How often am I compelled to sit in that chair? Where do my eyes naturally travel from this vantage point? Do I feel at ease or a sense of tension when I stand on this side of the room? The Palace becomes a test lab for feeling out those design choices. As my ideas evolve the space will too. A year from now it will look very different.
WHERE DO YOU DRAW DESIGN INSPIRATION FROM?
‘80s architecture, because no one was really trippin about being timeless. Any pre-’90s futurism has a similar wackiness and freedom and I just love to see it. Office buildings. Psychedelics (the spiritual and the aesthetic). The places I’ve been.

WILL YOU TRASH SOME clips OF THE PALACE?

&nbsp;WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO?

It’s important to me to create an enjoyable experience in the production process, whether it’s on set or building an art installation. I try to work with my friends whenever possible because they bring out the trust, play, and perspective that you need to not get burned out on projects. I’m so proud of what we make and how much fun we have doing it.

	Airis Encarnacion may go by @anxietyy.mp4, but her stylish video edits usually produce quite the opposite feeling. As a 15-year-old living in the Bay Area, Airis taught herself how to extract inspiring clips from film, television, music videos and other media in order to build supercuts reflecting her own creative vision. Airis is still developing who she is as an artist, but her body of work and engaged community of followers speaks to her emerging talent as a video creator.&nbsp;
TRASH caught up with Airis after her visit to our New York studio and asked her to TRASH some new edits for us.

	THANK YOU FOR BEING A TRASH ANGEL. How do you APPROACH a new edit? &nbsp;

Most of the time, it’s random. Like, ideas just come out of nowhere. The first thing that inspires me is the song. Usually it’s one of my favorite songs, or on my playlist, but sometimes I even find songs from other edits on instagram.

Music is always playing for me. Always. It is one of the biggest things for me. Anytime I hear a song, sometimes I can visualize videos and scenes in my head. I always try to expand my music taste as far as possible to find new songs, not just for edits, but also for my taste.

How do you source your content?

I usually get my source material from YouTube, vimeo, or other creators videos on Instagram.

Will you TRASH YOUR AESTHETIC?

What do you love most about making edits?&nbsp;

The thing I love most about making edits is the end product. Seeing it all come together, and seeing that people like it also fills my heart. It makes me so happy.
Do you have a favorite edit you’ve made?

I think one of my favorite edits I made was on August 28, captioned “BABUSHKA BOI.” That one was all me, except the clips. But I chose the song, and it was original content. The song fit perfectly to the clips and the mood of the video in some strange way, and it was just perfect to me.

Will you walk us through the source material you used to create your party-vibes VIDEO?

Yes – Dazed and Confused, That 70’s Show, the “Bandersnatch” episode of&nbsp; Black Mirror, an episode of Scooby-Doo, the “1979” music video by Smashing Pumpkins, some videos from @domfits on Instagram, the “Tunnel of Love” music video by haroinfather, and last but not least, 4th Grade’s Mid90s documentary from the movie mid90s.
&nbsp;found the song for this video on one of my friend’s edits (@dispost). I wanted the mood to be chill, so I chose clips of people dancing at parties, doing drugs and other things with their friends. It was fun to put that edit together, I really liked the song and the beat. Just everything about it, especially seeing the end product…. Creating a video like this can range from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on whether or not I really know what I want the video to look like, or its mood.

	TELL US ABOUT making YOUR “I HATE U 2” EDIT. &nbsp;
The artist that created this song, KESHORE, personally asked me to make them an edit for this song. This edit was actually a little difficult to make, since I’ve never edited to a song with a beat/sounds like “I HATE U 2.” The song has a vaporwave 80s, hypnotizing aesthetic.

do your edits connect you with a lot of&nbsp; other independent artists online?

Making edits has helped me find friends with similar interests. A lot of my online friends are editors, and we usually send each other our edits on instagram. I sometimes talk to them in calls, and one of my friends actually wants to go to school for video editing.

Will you TRASH one of your favorite music videos?

Yes, here’s a new edit of “Highest In The Room” by Travis Scott.

What edit accounts do you like to follow for inspiration and your own entertainment?

Some of my favorites are @dispost, @phylm, @cozykillz, @anniebercy, @wakeupzuzi, @nitetive, and @cutall111.
What is your favorite TV show right now?

My favorite TV show right now has to be either The Good Place or Euphoria. The Good Place is a great show to watch when I’m feeling down. It’s a comedy show with 20 minute episodes so I watch those sometimes. Euphoria is one of my favorites because of the visuals and Zendaya; I thought her acting was really good.

Who is your favorite influencer / creator right now?

Briana King! She’s a skater and she’s advocating for young girls to skate. I also love her style and her positivity.

	WHAT’S THE MOST RANDOM PLACE YOU’VE DISCOVERED NEW MUSIC?

An Apple commercial.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE NIGHTLIFE CULTURE YOU CONTRIBUTE TO?

Freeing, energetic, celebratory.

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE THE MUSIC YOU PLAY?

Nostalgic and euphoric.

HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START AS A DJ?

I’d say I got my start on the dance floors, I think every DJ should start that way. I knew what I wanted to hear when I was out there and now I can build a platform to play it for other people. It’s exciting. Queer parties like Ostbahnhof and Battle Hymn have definitely shaped my sound. When I hear a good track, I usually imagine myself playing it at one of those parties. If I can visualize it there, I know it’s a banger.WHO ARE YOUR MUSICAL IDOLS AND WHY?

Honey Dijon is my main idol when it comes to DJ’ing. I spent a long time not knowing what my passion in this life was, but after seeing her perform for the first time, I immediately knew that’s what I wanted to do. The party was Battle Hymn in New York. To this day, I have never seen a DJ who can take control of a crowd the way that she does. I aspire to be at that level in my skills one day … I know I will.

<img width="1280" height="1600" width_o="1280" height_o="1600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2cceed260c98c37086ab38091b29f8a6d57fecb4ff0bc93b3003211b76498d88/Trash_0556.jpg" data-mid="52192835" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2cceed260c98c37086ab38091b29f8a6d57fecb4ff0bc93b3003211b76498d88/Trash_0556.jpg" />

	WHAT’S THE BEST EVENT YOU’VE EVER PLAYED?
Ostbahnhof, hands down. I’ve played for bigger crowds, but the energy at that party is unmatched. There’s nothing better for a DJ than feeling like everyones actually listening to what you’re doing. At Ostbahnhof, I not only felt like people were listening, but connecting. I was communicating with them through the speakers and they were communicating with me by tearing up the dance floor. It was magical.

WHAT’S YOUR DREAM DJ GIG?

My dream changes as I achieve certain goals. At first it was to play Ostbahnhof, but now I’ve done that. Now it’s to go back to New York and stand where Honey Dijon stood and play for the scene that I initially came up in; I hope I will soon. After that… Berlin?

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT&nbsp; NIGHTLIFE CULTURE IN L.A.?

That you never know what kind of night you’re going to have when you leave the house. You could end up at a random house party with some of the coolest people or end up back home at 1:30 a.m. mad that you went out in the first place – that’s the magic! It makes the good nights that much more fun.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE LEAST ABOUT NIGHTLIGHT CULTURE IN L.A.?

I got my start partying in New York. Not only do the clubs there close later, but there’s a much wilder, “anything goes” energy that I wish we saw more in L.A. It definitely exists, but only in certain spaces. Usually illegal ones.

WHAT MOVIE HAVE YOU WATCHED THE MOST IN YOUR LIFE?

White Chicks. My mom had the DVD when it first came out and one year I got a DVD player for Christmas. It was the only thing I wanted to watch. I still watch it all the time. People hate watching it with me though because I will quote every single word.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT DJING?

To DJ, I think you have to have an innate love for partying and the culture, so I do like to go out with friends and hear other DJ’s. I also love a chill night in with friends eating thai and watching Euphoria.
